Godmanchester Rovers 3 Cambridge Rangers 2
Title chasing
Rangers came into this game expecting three points but following Sundays emphatic 14-0 league win Rovers were confident of
over turning the odds. Goddy for the first time all season had 17 players to choose from with only Yaz Ickin and Kerry Elmer
missing The first half saw Rovers playing into a strong head wind and had great difficulty in getting the ball out of their
own half. We created two decent chances in the whole first half but good goalkeeping by Rangers Keeper stoped
Goddy from scoring. On fifteen minutes the Rangers forward broke through to open the scoring. Despited continued pressure
Rovers held out until just before half time when the Rovers keeper made a great save but the parried shot was slotted home
for a Rangers 2-0 half time lead.
Despite being two goals down the Rovers players and managers were confident that
with the wind behind them they could make their fire power count and still win the game. Soon after kick off Sophie Hurst
made an inspired run, held off two players and drove the ball home from 35 yards out to open the scoring for Rovers. Rangers
struggled to clear their lines and continued pressure paid off when Sarah Gee headed the ball home for Rovers second after
a Becks Thoday corner. With ten minutes to go both teams went looking for the win but Rebecca Thoday made a break from midfield
to fire the ball home from 25 yards out to give Godmanchester all three points and a shock win. "This was our best perfomance
of the season and with the strong wind playing a significant factor this really was a game of two halfs. We were confident
that we could score a couple of goals in the second half and we were proved right. Our team has a great team spirit and
we have three or four players who can happily score from 25 yards out. With our fire power any team that sits back on a two
goal lead does so at their peril".
