Godmanchester Rovers Ladies 2
Kings Sport 0
After beating Huntingdon Town
5 – 0 in the midweek derby game Godmanchester Rovers played host to league leaders Kings Sport.
Godmanchester went into the game
with Karen Williams (Leg) and Sarah Gee (broken toe) both carrying injuries but were able to play the full 90minutes
Brimming with confidence Rovers
were confident of taking all three points. Rovers attacked from the kick off and could have opened the scoring in the first
minute when Claire Radford broke through the Kings Sport defence to shoot just wide. Rover’s dominance paid off and
they took the lead when a Laura McAllister cross was slotted home by Sarah Gee. Rovers continued to create chances and a Rovers
corner caused a goal mouth scramble and Karen Williams bundled the ball in for a comfortable 2-0 lead.
The second half saw Kings Sport
switch to three strikers to try and salvage the game. Despite having more possession they could not break down the resolute Rovers defence. Rovers were content to hit
Kings Sport on the break and midway through the second half a foul on Sarah Gee resulted in a Rovers penalty which the keeper saved. Rovers soaked up the pressure
and Kings Sport ran out of ideas and
time to suffer their first defeat of the season.
“Beating the league leaders
2-0 with a striker playing with a broken toe and a couple of players carrying injuries from our midweek derby win says it all. We got out tactics exactly right
today and pretty much won the game in the first half. We knew they would throw everything at us in the second half but our
defence are playing well and we were confident they would not break us down”.
