WOMENS F.A. CUP FIRST ROUND QUALIFYING
GODMANCHESTER ROVERS LADIES 1
COTTENHAM UTD LADIES 3
Rovers hosted their first ever
FA cup fixture and were hopeful of moving into the next round.
Godmanchester were dominant from
kick off and took the lead on fifteen minutes when a Sarah Gee free kick was rifled home from 20 yards out. Unfortunately
they could not capitalise on their supremacy with Laura McAllister and Perri Jefferies both missing easy opportunities. Rovers
went in at half time 1-0 up when really it should have been three or four.
A game of two half’s saw
a determined Cottenham team come out the stronger and creating chances which put Godmanchester under pressure. After ten minutes
Godmanchester should have sealed the game but once again a missed opportunity seemed to give Cottenham a wake up call. Injuries
from last week came back to haunt Godmancehster who had to make two quick substitutions which weakened the midfield. Cottenham
then started to play the better football and equalised with a good header from a corner. Soon afterwards Cottenham took the
lead with a cross come shot from the by-line caught the Rovers keeper of her line and dropped into the net. With five minutes
to go Cottenham scored their third to seal the win.
“We played them off the
park in the first half and should have gone in with a three or four goal lead but our finishing was pretty pathetic
and it kept Cottenham in the game.
Cottenham came out in the second half and obviously wanted the win more than us. We had at least six gilt edged chances to score but only put one away they had
three chances and scored all three simple as that. On the day the better team one however in fairness we did rest a couple of players ready for our local derby against
Huntingdon on Thursday”.
