Huntingdon 0 Godmanchester 5

Godmanchester Rovers Ladies visited their local rivals Huntingdon Town determined to prove they were the top ladies team in Huntingdon. The quality of the Rovers team soon showed as they totally dominated the game. Emily Ingle played a pin point pass which spilt the Huntingdon defence and Sarah Gee produced a quality chip over the oncoming keeper to open the scoring. The Rovers midfield continued to provide the ammunition for the rampant Finch and Gee and Huntingdon could not cope with their quality or strength. Rovers made it 2-0 when Finch shrugged off two defenders to slot the ball home. Soon afterwards a Rover  corner was tucked away by Laura McAllister to make it 3-0. With Huntingdon on the ropes Rovers continued to create chances with Perri Jefferies and Laura McAllister shooting just over the bar and the Gee/Finch partnership coming close to double their tallys. The pressure paid off when a long ball over the Huntingdon defence was controlled by Rebekah Finch and driven home for her second and Rovers fourth.

Huntingdon learnt their lessons from the first half and came out in the second half more organised. However with the pressure once again mounting  a clumsy challenge just outside the penalty area gave Rovers the chance they wanted. Sarah Gee stepped up and drove the ball over the defensive wall but unluckily shook the cross bar. Soon afterwards Huntingdon once again gave away a free kick on the edge of their penalty area. Huntingdon paid the price of not learning from the first free kick as Gee drove the ball home from over 20 yards out for her second and Rovers fifth.

The remainder of the second half saw Gee and Finch come close on a number of occasions for their hat tricks but the sixth goal would not come.

“ A 5-0 win in your local derby is a super result and quite rightly the goal scorers get most of the praise and glory. However more pleasing than the result was the fantastic team work every player put into the game. Our midfield provided quality balls to the strikers and our defence and keeper were so good Huntingdon did not get a single decent chance all game. The score line clearly shows that Rovers have quality players throughout their team and a class above their local rivals. The young Huntingdon team never gave up but will surely struggle this season to fight off relegation into the County League”.
