EASTERN REGION WOMENS LEAGUE DIVISION 1

GODMANCHESTER ROVERS 4  SAWBRIDGEWORTH TOWN 2

Godmanchester faced the League favourites with the luxury of an almost full squad and new signing Ounie Pegus. The only players missing from the Goddy sqaud were Sarah Moore and Zoe De Grussa

A frantic start to the game saw both teams battle to take control of the midfield which Karen Williams and Sarah Gee  playing in the middle of the park with Laura Mc and Claire Radford on the wings  .

On fifteen minutes Sawbridgeworth open the scoring from a corner with a tap in. Soon afterwards Godmanchester made it 1-1 when a Sawbridgeworth defender scored an own goal off of a Sarah Gee cross. With ten minutes to go Sawbridgeworth took the lead however just before half time Rovers levelled the score when Sarah Gee lobbed the goalie from the edge of the box after a through ball from Perri Jeffries

The second half saw Godmanchester take the game by the scruff of the neck and their early dominance paid off when Perri Jeffries floated in a free kick which Sarah Gee converted for a well earned 3-2 lead. Despite Sawbridgeworth hunting for an equaliser the well organised Godmanchester defence kept them at bay. Godmanchester sealed a well deserved victory when a Perri Jefferies corner was met at the near post by Laura McAllister who flicked it home for a 4-2 victory. Becks Thoday made her comeback from a broken arm in the second half and played at right back for the last 20minutes, However Sarah Gee was forced to leave the field off play when she pulled a calf muscle and Goddy had to play the final 8 minutes with 10players but held on for a fantastic win against a quality team

“This was our best ever performance and our players showed guts, determination and the will to win, they wanted the win more than Sawbridgeworth”.

Oppositions choice of players player went to Emily Ingle who had a solid game in the centre of defence
